Conclusion

Now that we have done the experiment, it was interesting to see how people imagined different things happening within the images. I found that younger people like Lisa who is 14 and the two 1st year's at DOJ, were more creative with thier stories and did not point out the obvious. People more mature however, were able to see parts of the correct story and once the text and fourth image were added, the majority got the story almost correct. Some people did however, have completely different stories to others and this may have been influenced by thier personalities and backgrounds. This is explained in Barthe's essay. So therefore I'm now seeing the connections with Barthe's essay and the experiment. Different people have different views to things and I found that to be true for this experiment. However, I did not feel that the results were all that surprising, simply because anyone who is told to look at images and tell a story will see different things. That is exactly what happened in the experiment.

  1. The results may not be surprising, but the explanation surely is interesting, and it leads to other things as you'll see in the lecture on taste. Why is one person's "fantastic" new dress of no interest, or even repellent to someone else? Why do people from one social background decorate their homes in a different way from people from another social background? Why do graphic design students look different from psychology students?

The fact that apples fall to the ground never surprised anyone, but the theory of gravity is now being used to discover planets in solar systems hundred of light years away! Sometimes it's worth asking why something "obvious" happens... :)
